The 5% reduced rate covers some energy-saving installs and certain residential conversions/renovations — check the HMRC rules for your job type before quoting it.

The registration threshold

You must register for VAT once taxable turnover passes £90,000 in a rolling 12 months — and many trades hover just underneath it deliberately. If you're close, watch the rolling number, not the tax year, and talk to your accountant before a big contract tips you over mid-job.

Quote inc or ex VAT?

For homeowners, always quote the VAT-inclusive figure — a “+VAT” surprise at invoice time is how disputes start. For business clients, ex-VAT is the convention since they usually reclaim it. Our quote builder handles either with the VAT toggle.
